Be = base, Am, Is, Are = Simple Present, Was, Were = Past, Being = Present Participle, Been = Past Participle

I am: first person, singular
He, she, it is: third person, singular
We are: first person, plural
You are: second person, singular and plural
They are: third person, plural
I was: first person, singular
He, she, it was: third person, singular
We
were: first person, plural
They were: third person, plural


Verb to Be +  Present Participle =  Continuous Tense

I
am taking piano lessons.
He is praying in the sanctuary.
She is driving to the art show.
It is raining hard outside.
George is going to the church.
Jessica is flying to New York.
We are baking cookies.
You are sitting in my chair.
The ladies are arranging flowers.
The children are riding their bikes.
They are having dinner.
Public outrages are spreading like wildfire.
I was watching
TV when the earth shook.
He was doing his homework when the phone rang.
She was reading a bible yesterday evening.
It was snowing when we got to the mountain.
Tammy was washing her car when the rain came.
Roger was using his computer when the electricity went out.

Verb to Be +  Past Partciple = Passive Voice

Believe and be saved!

is allowed to use the school's computer.

Two soldiers
were killed in road side bombing.

Verb to Be + Adjective

Be kind to each other.
I
am satisfied with the outcome.
She
is patient with the kids.
It
is impolite to stare at people.
The security officers
were rude.
We
are supposed to leave the hotel before noon.
There
was plenty of food at the party.
The girls
were slim a couple of years ago.

What have we learned here? Verb to be is followed by one of the followings:
* Present Participle
* Past Participle
* Adjective


It is incorrect to write or say:

We are have dinner.
The dog was
kill by a truck.
We are
surprise to see snow in March.
