Interjections
are short exclamations like Oh!, Um or Ah!
They have no real grammatical value but we use them quite often, usually more in speaking than in writing.
An interjection is sometimes followed by an exclamation mark (!) when written.


Interjection Expression Example
Ah Pleasure Ah, that's relaxing.
Realization Ah, now it's clear to me.
Resignation Ah, it can't be fixed.
Surprise Ah, We made it!
Alas Grief or Pity Alas, she's lost her life saving.
Dear Surprise Dear me! I can't believe they did it.
Pity Oh dear! Are you okay?
Eh Enquiry What do you think of that, eh?
Surprise En! Is that right?
Agreement Let's get started, eh?
Er Hesitation The capital of Canada is ... er ... Ottawa.
Hmm Hesitation, Doubt or Disagreement Hmm. I'm not so sure.
Oh Surprise Oh! You're here!
Pain Oh! My leg hurts.
Pleading Oh, please say 'yes'!
Ouch Pain Ouch! That hurts!
Um Hesitation Um...I am not sure about that.
Well Surprise Well, that was incredible!
Remark Well, what do you think?
